Medical
Informatics and
Medical Technology
In 2002,
Judith completed Stanford University School of Medicine's Medical Informatics
Short Course, on campus, and joined the American Medical Informatics
Association. She attended the Telehealth 2002 teleconference
sponsored by the Association of Telehealth Service Providers (ATSP) and
several workshops and presentations at the American Health Informatics
Management Association (AHIMA) annual convention in San Francisco
in September 2002. She eight years of experience in editing for technology
companies, including Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks, Netscape Communications
and Vocera Communications and other well-known corporations. (See
Client Listing.)
Now she's
combining her new understanding of how the medical field is using computers
and the Internet from electronic medical records (EMRs) to surgery
assisted by virtual reality and robotics to edit everything from
marketing communications collateral to technical documentation for companies
involved in this emerging and exciting field. Her related interests include
behavioral health care informatics; telehealth and telemedicine;
and medical devices that use sensors and voice-recognition technology.
Her recent tech editing for Vocera Communications, for instance, was for
the user and system administrator guides for their new voice-activated
badge and communications system, which is used in hospitals and large
medical centers.
HIPAA
Privacy Compliance
See the Recent
Articles section (soon) for Judith's report on HIPAA Summit's
recent teleconference with experts' analysis of the final HIPAA privacy
ruling. Later this month, she'll add a report on the sessions from the
AHIMA national convention on what social service programs and behavioral
health care providers need to consider to comply with HIPAA by the deadline
next April.
Ergonomics
and Occupational Health
Judith developed,
researched and edited the initial issues of Ergovera
Ergonomic Consulting's newsletter on the latest studies in ergonomics.
She subscribes to the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology
and the E-PsycSCAN: Applied Psychology online research service,
which compiles journal reports on accidents and safety, human factors,
ergonomics and management and organizational psychology. In November 2002,
she expanded her knowledge in this field by taking the Emerging Workplace
Safety and Legal Issues workshop at the American Medical Writers Association
(AMWA) annual conference.
Health
Information for Consumers
Judith
wrote feature articles for many national consumer magazines and daily
newspapers coast-to-coast for several years (see Publications)
and has written and edited Web copy since the Web existed.
Judith
already has more than 10 years experience writing, editing and even publishing
newsletters. In early 2003, she added to her knowledge by taking San Jose
State University's new five-week course called Writing Newsletters
for the Biotech and Health Industries.
Patient
Education and Information
Kaiser
Permanente Health Foundation's Member Marketing Department has been
one of Judith's clients since 2000. In November 2002, she took these three
workshops at the annual AMWA conference to enhance her skills (see sample
in the Portfolio section:
- Writing
Patient Education Materials
- Writing
Patient Education Content for the Web
- Writing
and Editing for HMOs
Judith already
has more than 10 years of experience writing, editing and even publishing
newsletters. In
early 2003, she added to her knowledge by taking San Jose State University's
new five-week course called Writing Newsletters for the Biotech and
Health Industries.
MEDLINE
and PsycINFO Research
She's not
a whiz yet, but she's been using MEDLINE intermittently for many years.
IN 2002, she completed a workshop at Stanford University School of
Medicine's Lane Medical Library on using EndNote to search
PubMed and Ovid and took AMWA's Making the Most of MEDLINE workshop.
She subscribes to PsycINFO and E-PsycSCAN: Applied Psychology
online research services and did the initial research for Ergovera
Ergonomic Consulting's newsletter on the latest studies in ergonomics.
Need help?
She's still learning the very complex art of searching PubMed and
PsycINFO, so she's negotiable on rates, and you're sure to get
a deal!
Health
Psychology
Judith is
a member of the Health Psychology division of the American Psychological
Association (APA) and subscribes to their Health Psychology
journal. She completed all but the last quarter of a master's degree
in Educational Psychology, with a vocational rehabilitation
counseling emphasis, before she had to discontinue her studies when
her child died suddenly and unexpectedly. That led to the demise of her
marriage, too (a rather common result of the death of a child, alas).
In 1997,
she completed the Spirituality and Health seminar conducted by
Harvard University Medical School's Division of Continuing Education,
which increased the interest she already had in the health ramifications
of psychology and spirituality. Until recently, she has pursued that fascination
through avid reading. Now she's going back to school again, slowly but
steadily, in the related but relatively new field of health psychology.
Addiction
Research and Treatment
Judith is
a member of the Addictions division of the American Psychological
Association (APA) and subscribes to the Psychology of Addictive
Behaviors journal.
She worked as the community services coordinator at the CareUnit Hospital
of Portland, Oregon, part of what was then the largest chain of
chemical dependency treatment centers in the nation (since closed). She
has participated in 12-step programs and recently reviewed portions of
the 2000 American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Review
Course in Addiction Medicine and the ASAM's Ruth Fox Course for
Physicians via audiotapes, including these sessions:
- Neurobiological
and Other Recent Developments in Addiction Research
- The
Scientific Basis of Addiction Treatment
- State
of the Art in Alcoholism Treatment
- Psychiatric
Issues in Addictions
